Food Safety, Traceability and Authenticity: Opportunities and Challanges for the Agri-Food Industries

29 September 2009

Food Safety and traceability is a major concern for us all. To reassure concerned consumers and safeguard the local agri-food industry, suppliers must be confident of the integrity of food produced on the island of Ireland.

In response to these needs a world class Centre for Food, Assured SafE and Traceable (Food ASSET) has been established at Queen’s University Belfast.  Led by Professor Christopher Elliot, Director of The Institute of Agri-food and Land use, Food ASSET will harness scientific knowledge on the island of Ireland and develop evidence based approaches for assessing risks and hazards associated with agri-food supply chains. The Centre will use this knowledge to develop innovative ways to enhance food safety and traceability that will support the future economic development of the agri-food sector.

Queens University Belfast is hosting a one day conference on Tuesday 29 September 2009 to give an overview of the global importance of food safety and traceability, to demonstrate the research being conducted at the university and to inform local companies on how they can become involved in ensuring that local produce is the most assured in the world.

This conference will be particularly relevant to any business involved with food processing and manufacturing at any stage of the supply chain.
