Improving Design for Manufacture capabilities
Southern Regional College (SRC) has just completed a 16 month technology driven FUSION project with Clones based manufacturing company Alpha Tanks Ltd.
SRC Alpha Tanks Ltd
Funded by InterTradeIreland, FUSION allows companies and academic organisations on either side of the border to collaborate on strategic development projects through the transfer and embedding of technical knowledge into the company.
Alpha Tanks Ltd manufacture tanks and tank components but saw an opportunity to increase its market share of manufacturing pressure vessels. In order to achieve this, they needed to improve their technical capability in the area of 3D design and embedding an appropriate pressure vessel design package into their manufacturing processes. This would allow the company to accurately manufacture products in compliance with the codes and regulations relating to pressure vessels.
Through FUSION, the company recruited a Mechanical Engineering graduate to lead the project and partnered with an Engineering Research Lecturer from SRC’s, i3 Business Centre whose role was to transfer new knowledge into the company and provide mentoring support to the graduate. New design software was implemented and pilot projects were successfully completed. The company also used the additional resource of the graduate and the enhanced capabilities of the company to help achieve ISO 9001 Quality Management System accreditation.
The company is now in a position to design and manufacture a wide range of pressure vessels in terms of scale and complexities and has seen an increase in customer confidence in their design and manufacturing capabilities. This translated into new sales for the company during the project and the company are confident that this will rise year on year.
Speaking about the project, company director Fergal Cleary said “without the structured support of FUSION, I don’t think this project would have taken place or certainly not within the same timeframe. Part of our strategy is to increase our export sales of tanks and pressure vessels. The FUSION project has enhanced our technical capabilities, putting Alpha Tanks in an improved position to win new orders”.
The Connected funding provided to SRC by the Department for Employment and Learning allows the College to dedicate staff to form links with industry and encourage the benefits of collaborative partnerships such as this project with Alpha Tanks.
